social events at the xxxV congress

30 May 2018

Wednesday 30 May was the grand opening day. It started at 9 o'clock in the morning with a very special ceremony in the Theater of the Canadian Museum of Nature (for more information regarding the official opening ceremony of the congress).

In the same evening, the official opening of the FIDEM exhibition was held at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa. In the Rotunda of the museum, Town Crier, Daniel Richer, member of the First Nations Abenaki tribe
, wearing a traditional dress and holding a talking stick greeted the participants to the congress, blessed and officially opened the exhibition.

The director of the museum then spoke and welcomed FIDEM and its participants to the Canadian Museum of Nature.

Lynden Beesley then invited Susan Taylor to come forward. The official FIDEM congress medal was presented again and it was revealed that Susan had designed it. She received an engraved example of the medal.

Once the ceremony was over it felt like a big wave was moving towards the upper gallery where the medals were on display.

There was one showcase containing medals made by students of the Elmwood School in Ottawa. Some 38 young girls had gotten the task from their art teacher to make medals in felt with the subject of Canadian women in science. The results were intriguing and amazing.

And it is always the most "innocent" people that are up to no good. The upper gallery throwing small pieces of papers at the "poor" innocent recipients of the projectiles having a medallic (?) discussion.

Others were discussing if the "object" was in fact a chicken or a medal...or not...

Others were not going to get into that debate...

Others were really talking about the subject at hand over a screen...

or over a glass

Others decided it was time to get acquainted with the local animals

All in all, it was a fantastic and well visited opening of the XXXV FIDEM medal exhibition.
